Health impacts of small-scale gold mining in Kenyasi, Ghana

Small-Scale Gold Mining (SSGM) is a way of life for many individuals living in mineral-rich but poverty-stricken areas Africa. The sector provides households with much needed income their livelihood sustenance. Although the literature on SSGM have brought some consensus environmental issues surrounding sector, limited attention has been directed at health and safety associated small-scale gold mining processes.  This paper contributes to fulfilling this gap. Based case study, discusses each stage process. Mixed methods approach was used gather relevant data information through field observations, focus group discussions miners, interviews key informants, content analysis secondary data. miners seem unaware safe operating procedures implications processes. formal regulations exist, there lack official oversight monitoring activities. Policy from study are discussed. They include educating raise awareness, decentralizing permitting, responsibilities local governments institutions.   Key words: Galamsey, artisanal, mining, issues.
